Susan Elizabeth “Suzy” McFarland, 68, of Columbus, Ohio passed away on November 27, 2024 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Suzy was born on October 9, 1956 to Robert and Fern (Kuivinen) McFarland in Geneva, Ohio.
Suzy graduated from Geneva High School in 1975. While in school she enjoyed being in the marching band where she was an excellent trumpet player. She also attended Kent State University, Ashtabula Campus and the University of Toledo.
Suzy found her passion for retail merchandising while working at Carlisle’s department store in Ashtabula, OH. Later she moved to Columbus, OH and worked her way from retail sales into the buying offices of a major retail chain.
Suzy left the corporate world to follow a more spiritual path. She studied Reiki, becoming a Reiki master, teaching others and guiding energy for healing. She also worked in a variety of stores that focused on new age philosophy, helping others to find their spiritual path.
Additionally, Suzy followed many creative paths and was proficient in cross-stitch, crochet, calligraphy and jewelry making to name a few, creating and gifting her creations to others. She enjoyed all types of music and was a big fan of the Beatles, especially John Lennon, with whom she shared a birthday.
Suzy joined the Baha’i faith at the age of 19, actively participating in the small community in Geneva, Ohio helping with the children to allow others to perform service projects. When the Baha’i’s had a booth at the Geneva Grape Jamboree, she wrote a script for a puppet show based on the book “The Gift” which was then performed there. She also made the curtains and scenery for the puppet theater and helped design the puppets. The puppet show was then presented at many nursing facilities in the surrounding Geneva area, for which the Baha’i Community received a community service award.
After Suzy moved to Columbus, she was asked to be the live-in caretaker for the Baha'i Center, ensuring that everyone who used it for various Baha'i activities were well taken care of and that the facility was always spotless.
Even when Suzy was sick at the end of her life, she served the Baha'i Faith as the Feast Coordinator for the NE sector of Columbus, organizing the hosts, programs and refreshments, a job she could do by phone from home.
Suzy was a kind, loving, and compassionate friend. She gave her time and talent to help others, taking care of people even when she herself needed care. In the words of her friend Peace, “life was better with Suzy in it.”
Suzy was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her sisters Rebecca (Jon) Werner, Carol Curtin, and Kathy (Jim) Williams, as well as her beloved nieces and nephews and loving friends.
